ASSERTIVENESS

Four Forms of Assertion

1.    Basic Assertion:

A simple direct expression of your feelings, thoughts or rights without violating those of others.

2.    Empathetic Assertion:

A paraphrase of your understanding of another's feelings, thoughts or rights along with the expression of your own.

3.    Constructive Feedback:

A statement pointing to a single specific thing the other person did or said along with how their actions or words affect you.

4.     Escalating Assertion:

An increase in the intensity of your message as the result of persistence from others:

a. By repeating your assertive statement using one or more of the above forms

b. By an honest statement of the probable consequences If they continue to persist

c. By a statement that shifts the focus from the content of your disagreement to your perception of the process that's going on between the two of you.
