TEN COMMON IDEAS THAT LEAD TO SELF-DEFEATING BEHAVIOR1. I must have sincere love and approval almost all the time from all the people I find significant. 2. I must prove myself thoroughly competent, adequate, and achieving, or at least I must have real competence and talent at something important. 3. When things do not go the way I would like them to go, this means that life is awful, terrible, horrible or catastrophic. 4. People who make mistakes that hurt me deserve to blamed and punished, or at least rated as bad individuals. 5. If something seems fearful, I must become preoccupied and interrupt my life without feeling upset or worried. 6. When problems or hassles arise, it is awful If I do not find a good solution quickly. 7. I have little ability to affect my own feelings since emotional difficulty comes from external pressures which I cannot control. 8. It is easier to avoid than to face life's difficulties and responsibilitles. 9. Because something once strongly influenced my life, it has to continue to determine my feelings and behavior indefinitely. 10. Happiness can be achieved by passive inertia and inaction, or by uncommitted observation of people or events. |
